Cyber-Assault on Estonia

Cyberattacks started April 27 knocking out websites of government departments, political parties, media groups and banks punished one of the worlds most wired countries. This is a form of warning to other nations how a sustained and organized assault to the Internet can affect the countries stability.

The attacks started the day the Estonian authorities removed a controversial Soviet war memorial from a park in the capital, Tallinn.. The perpetrators sophisticated bombardment was unprecedented, it marked the first time the power centers of an entire nation were targeted simultaneously. It was DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attack. It brings the thought that what stops Organizations like al-Qaeda using cyber-attack and do reconnaissance if they have experts doing it for them?

The reason one suspects this to happen is a little far-off, since terrorists might not attempt the sort of cyber-war Estonia suffered from.

“Terrorism is about creating true fear with spectacularly lurid attacks, Groups like al-Qaeda would rather do something physical.” - Oxford’s Jonathan Zittrain.

For the tech-savvy Estonians however, the Invasion of their cyberspace was scary enough. The wars playing field has ultimately changed…
